Defensible Space and Removal of Significant Trees in the Coastal Zone

County Code Section 13.20 (Coastal Zone Regulations) regulates the removal of large trees within the area of the Coastal Zone.  A permit is required to remove these trees and replacement trees are usually required to mitigate the loss of trees.  If however, such trees are to be removed for the purpose of facilitating the 30-foot defensible fire area around a dwelling unit, an emergency permit process can be obtained that is simple and inexpensive.  Persons considering removal of significant trees in the Coastal Zone should contact the Planning Department in person during hours of operation, or call the Zoning Information Phone Line for more detailed information.
